Clear Communication > Unhelpful Jargon: 7 Steps to Effective Brand Messaging

Jun 17, 2024

Intro

Welcome to the world of branding! You’ve leaped into entrepreneurship, but now you’re faced with the big question: How do you build branding for your business? Let’s dive in and demystify the process.

Branding is the essence of your business – it’s how you distinguish yourself in a crowded marketplace. It’s not just about the visuals; it’s also about the message you convey to your audience. At OneTeam, we specialize in strategic branding, helping businesses like yours carve out a unique identity.

The Steps

So, what does the branding research and design process look like at OneTeam?

  1. Find your main character (client)
    • Your audience influences everything. They affect the design elements of your brand, but more importantly, they drive the narrative you tell and the way you engage online. If you don’t know who you’re talking to, your marketing will be ineffective.
  2. Find the character’s motive
    • After finding out the type of character you’re going after, we explore what motivates them. What empowers them and drives them to success? These motivations matter in your branding and marketing materials.
  3. Find the character’s problems (internal, external, and philosophical)
    • On the flip side, you also need to determine what problems they feel. After all, you can be an expert in your field, but if you aren’t helping solve your client’s problems, you won’t have a loyal customer base.
  4. Find ways to build empathy
    • Letting your customer know that you understand the way they feel, means everything. Too often businesses position themselves in a way that seems like they’ve elevated themselves beyond the normal human experience. But we highly recommend letting your customer know that you’ve been there and you know how they feel.
  5. Find ways to build authority
    • Your customer wants to have confidence in you. Building authority with your customers is a way for you to showcase your expertise and prove to your clients that you’re the person they can feel confident in and you can solve their problem. If your business has any awards, certifications, ongoing training, etc., your customers want to see those, it shows that you care about ongoing knowledge and education and they can rest assured that you’re the most qualified person for the job.
  6. Build a guide for the characters to find their way
    • Give your customers clear direction. It’s great to share on your website and social media about your business, its history, and the future, but if you’re not clearly showing your audience how they can work with you and their steps to success – you’ll lose them. Your client is the hero of the story, your job is to be their guide to success.
  7. Give them calls to action
    • Calls to action like, “Book a Discovery Call” or “Schedule a Consultation” makes Step 1 abundantly clear for your audience. It helps your customer know where to start and also gets them excited about connecting with you or your team.

Once we’ve laid the groundwork, we’ll move on to crafting visuals and a tone of voice that align with your brand message. The end result? A cohesive brand identity that resonates with your audience and sets you up for success.
